What is the Genuine Student (GS) Test? – Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) - Directions 106 & 108
The Genuine Student (GS) test assesses whether an applicant genuinely intends to enter and stay in Australia temporarily for the primary purpose of studying, and not to use the Student visa to maintain ongoing residence or circumvent the migration program.
This requirement is highly discretionary and is assessed case-by-case by visa decision makers and, if applicable, the Administrative Review Tribunal. A well-prepared GS statement is therefore critical.
The 5 Required Headings in a Genuine Student Statement

It should cover:
- Family ties (parents, spouse, children, dependants)
- Community and social connections
- Employment history and current occupation

- Any obligations or incentives to return home after study
Purpose:
To demonstrate that the applicant has strong reasons to return to their home country and is not seeking to remain in Australia indefinitely.
